Examination and Evaluation

Evaluation of a student in each course is a continuous process, based on:

Evaluation Components Weightage Mode of Evaluation
Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) 50% Tests, Assignments, Quizzes, Tutorials, etc.,
Semester End Examination (SEE) 50% Written, Practical

Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE)

CIE is based on tests/ practical session/hands on session or any other form of evaluation depending on the type of course. The following section details the process for theory and laboratory courses

Theory Courses

CIE is conducted by way of two tests (Refer Academic Calendar of Events) each with a maximum of 40 marks and 10 marks evaluated through alternate assessment tools (AAT). The average marks of the tests are computed as the final test marks.

  • One compensatory test will be provided to those students who are having satisfactory attendance, course-wise but remained absent for either test 1 or test 2 due to a valid/unavoidable circumstance with prior permission. The syllabus for the compensatory test would be the entire course syllabus, conducted in the last week of the classes during the semester.
  • Test 1, Test 2 and compensatory test would be written on individual test booklets. The books after evaluation are shown to the student for him/her to understand points of improvement.
  • The marks are compiled by the respective departments, displayed on the Department Notice Board and a copy is also sent to the Office of the Controller of Examinations.
  • AAT would include periodic evaluation of the student through quizzes, surprise tests and assignments. The evaluation of assignment could be descriptive / analytical type assessment spread throughout the semester, weekly/fortnightly, assignments, problem solving, group discussions and seminars depending on the course. CIE could also be evaluated by experiential learning, collaborative learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, web based learning, game based learning, compute-support collaborative learning, mobile assisted learning, seamless puzzle based learning. This could include any activities of off campus learning in the relevant discipline.
  • To maintain transparency, the students are required to check the test/quiz/assignment booklets after evaluation and affix their signature.

Question Papers for CIE

The head of the department appoints an internal faculty to set the question paper as per standards set for each of the tests. The questions papers are sent to the office of the COE one day prior to the test. The office of the COE takes responsibility to photocopy the required number of copies of the question paper on the day of the test. The same is handed over to the department for conduction.

The Head of the Department and the team ensures that the conduction of the test is done in a smooth and fair manner.

Laboratory Courses

The laboratory session is held every week as per the timetable and the performance of the student is evaluated every session. The average of marks over number of the sessions is considered for 20 marks. An internal test is conducted at the end of the 14th week for a maximum of 20 marks. The students are tested for their exposure on practical aspects of the course by means of a viva voce at the end of the semester for 10 marks.

  • HOD shall announce the CIE marks in the Department notice board prior to the commencement of semester end examination (SEE). Any discrepancy in CIE marks shall be brought to the notice of the concerned faculty immediately by the students for redressal before the commencement of SEE.
  • The department shall submit the CIE marks duly signed by the faculty in-charge and HOD to COE on or before the last academic working day of the semester.

Semester End Examination (SEE)

SEE is based on Examination for theory courses and practical session for laboratory courses.

Theory Courses

SEE is conducted for 100 marks by means of an examination. The Question paper would have ten questions with two questions from each module. Students would be required to answer any five of the questions with one question compulsorily from each module. The maximum marks for each question would be 20 marks with a maximum of four sub-divisions.

Question Papers for SEE

The Chairman of the Board of Examiners appoints faculty (both internal and external) for setting of question papers for each course. A list of the same is sent to the office of COE. The question papers are received by the office of the COE and handed over to the Chairman of the COE for scrutiny. The scrutinized papers are sent to the office of the COE. The office of the COE would collate the questions from different sets of question papers for a course, type it and invite the Chairman of the COE and senior faculty for proof reading. The scrutinized papers would be stored in the strong room of the COE and opened only on the day of the examination. The decision of the final question paper set to be photocopied would solely be under the discretion of the Chief of Controller of Examinations/COE

Laboratory/Project Work/Internship

Question Paper pattern covering experiments/programs as mentioned in the syllabus for the respective laboratory shall be set by the faculty members handling the labs and scrutinized by the Chairman of COE. There will be two examiners - internal and external for SEE of lab courses (including project, internship, mini-projects, etc.)

The breakup of the SEE marks for practical/project work/internship is as shown.

Evaluation of SEE Theory Answer booklets

The answer scripts of SEE may be normally evaluated by two evaluators with an independent evaluation process.

If the difference between the marks awarded by two evaluators is less than 10%, then the average of the two marks awarded by the two evaluators is the final marks.

If the difference between the marks awarded by two evaluators is greater than 10%, then a third evaluator assess the script. The average marks of the closest two evaluations are taken as the final marks. If one of the three evaluation marks falls exactly midway between the two, then higher two evaluation marks are taken and the average of this is awarded as final marks.

Paper Viewing

A student could apply for viewing of his/her answer script after the declaration of the result. An application form for the same with detail of subjects whose answer scripts are to be viewed is duly filled by the candidate and submitted to the office of COE with the fees duly paid. The student on the announced date and time of the paper viewing would be accompanied by the faculty mentor/parent to view the script. The answer script along with the scheme and solution would be shown to the student with the marks evaluated.

The student needs to write his/her comments in a register provided after paper viewing

Passing Standards

  • Minimum CIE marks for appearing for theory/laboratory courses is 40% of the maximum marks. If the student secures CIE marks less than 40% then such students are not allowed to take SEE examination for the concerned subject which would be categorized as Not Satisfying Sessional Requirements (NSSR) status which will amount to F grade in the course.
  • A student needs to secure a minimum of 40% of the maximum marks in the theory/laboratory course.
  • The student needs to secure a minimum mark of 40 (Combined CIE and SEE) out of a total of 100 marks to qualify for a pass grade in the subject. .

Description of Grades

Table 6c: Grade and Grade Points (For M.Tech Program)

Grade Description
S Superlative grade which indicates outstanding achievement by the student awarded to a student for scoring 90 marks and above in a course.
A Excellent performance awarded for scoring 80 marks and above but less than 90 marks in a course.
B Very Good performance awarded for scoring 70 marks and above but less than 80 marks in a course.
C Good performance awarded for scoring 60 marks and above but less than 70 marks in a course.
D Above average performance awarded for scoring 50 marks and above but less than 60 marks in a course.
E Average performance and is the minimum passing grade, awarded for scoring 40 marks and above but less than 50 marks in a course.
F Failure and very poor performance. A student who obtains ‘F’ grade in a course shall repeat that course in subsequent semester
or supplementary semester when it is offered. However, if a student gets ‘F’ grade in an elective theory course, he / she can register for the same elective.
I This grade is a transitional grade which denotes incomplete grade. This grade is awarded to a student having satisfactory attendance at
classes and meeting the passing standard at CIE in a course, but remained absent from SEE for valid and convincing reasons acceptable to the college, like :

1. Severe illness or accidents, which disable him/her from attending SEE

2. A calamity in the family at the time of SEE, which required the student to be away from the college.
The candidate or the parents should inform the incident to the Chief Superintendent of Examination before the commencement of particular examination.
The documents related to the incident shall be submitted to the Controller of Examinations with in a week’s time from the date of that particular examination
or last day of that particular even/ odd semester examination, whichever is earlier.

3. Any other exigency which the Grading Advisory Committee thinks requires a consideration, like a
student representing the institution / state / university / nation in university/state/national/international level events / competition.
In such case, the student is required to take prior permission from Head of the institution with relevant documents.
The student should also submit the proof of having attended the event / competition immediately after returning,
without which the transitional grade will not be considered. IF the student does not submit the relevant documents that supports claim of the candidate
to abstain from the examination if not submitted within the prescribed period,
such applications are liable to rejected for I grade.
The grading advisory committee’s decision regarding the awarding the I grade is final.

W This grade is awarded to a student withdrawing from a course before the prescribed date in a semester under the advice of the Faculty
Advisor. Withdrawal from a course shall be allowed only under exceptional circumstances and has to be recommended by the HOD of the Department.
No withdrawal is permitted after the grades are announced.
X This grade is a transitional grade which denotes incomplete grade. A student having satisfactory attendance and having high
CIE rating (>=90%) in a course, but SEE performance is poor, which could result in an overall ‘F’ grade in the course, will be awarded this grade.
The department/COE can consider the request of any such student for a makeup examination and depending on the merit
of the case and in consultation with the course instructor permit him/her to appear for makeup examination.
The ‘X’ grade would be converted into one or the other of the letter grades (S/A/B/C/D/E/F)
after the student completes the course requirements. If the student fails to get at least the
minimum pass grade in makeup examination, he/she shall repeat the course in a subsequent semester when it is offered.

Make-up Examination

The Make-up Examination facility shall be available to the students who have been awarded the transitional Grades (I-Grade or the X- Grade).

The Make- up Examination will be scheduled by COE after the announcement of Odd/Even semester results.

The standard of the Make-up Examination shall be the same as that of the regular SEE for the Courses.

There shall be no makeup examination for any course in the credit system for following students:

  • Who have absented themselves from attending CIE or SEE without valid reasons
  • Who have failed (secured ‘F’ grade) to meet the minimum passing standards prescribed for CIE and/or SEE
  • Who have been detained for want of attendance
  • Who have withdrawn from the course (W grade)

Students having temporary grades (I/X) who do not make use of the makeup examination, their temporary grades shall automatically convert into F grade.

Summer Term

Summer Term is conducted at the end of every even semester and after the announcement of even semester results. Students need to register only for offered course for a maximum of 16 credits but not exceeding 4 courses, including both theory and laboratory.

In Summer Term students can register only for courses with F/W grade and they cannot register for new courses for credit. No change in elective courses are permitted during the Summer Term.

All the rules for taking-up normal semester SEE holds well for fast track semester SEE. Temporary grades (I/X/W) are not awarded in Summer Term.

Grade Card

  • Each student will be issued a grade card at the end of odd and even semester as well as fast track examinations.
  • This will have a list of all the courses registered by the student for the examination together with their credits, the letter grades and grade points awarded.
  • The result of mandatory courses, which are of the non-credit type, will also be reflected in the grade card with appropriate letter grades.

Calculation of SGPA and CGPA

SGPA =

((Course credits x (Grade points))(for all course in that semester) (Course credits)(for all courses in that semester)

CGPA =

((Course credits x (Grade points))(for all course excluding with F grade in that semester) (Course credits)(for all courses in that semester)
